“The Christmas Sweater is a story that actually started writing itself when I was 13 years old,” Beck said. “It is something that really shaped my life and is something I didn’t really begin to understand until I was in my thirties. This is one of the most important things I have ever done - I had to get this story right.”

Based on a deeply personal true story, Glenn Beck’s The Christmas Sweater is a narrative of a boy named Eddie who wanted nothing more than a new bike for Christmas from his mother. What he got instead was a sweater, a “stupid, handmade, ugly sweater” which Eddie crumpled into a ball and left in the corner of his room. That Christmas morning started a tragic and painful road to manhood for Eddie. It takes a battle with himself, his family, and his faith to help Eddie fight through the storm to the realization he already had life’s most valuable treasures, and the simple sweater from his mother was given with a love more valuable than any gift.

Downtown Awaits the Arrival of the City Christmas Tree

On this coming Monday, November 17^th, the Downtown will receive a joyful burst of the holiday spirit with the arrival of the City’s official Christmas tree. The tree, which has been graciously donated by Ronald and Vicki Boerner, will be cut down by Industrial Contractors on Monday morning around 6:00 a.m at 14200 N. St. Joseph Avenue. It will then be transported Downtown to Second and Main Street where it will be decorated with lights by Evansville’s dedicated city workers. The tree is scheduled to be lit during the 20^th Annual Downtown Holiday Parade on Sunday, November 23^rd and will remain lit throughout the holidays.

According to the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville (GAGE) the selection committee received a record number of nominations this year. Although it was a difficult decision, the Boerner’s tree was ultimately chosen for its pleasing aesthetic qualities and the enduring long-standing story behind it.

The blue spruce was originally hand-picked in the late 70’s as a Christmas tree by the previous owners and their 3 young children and afterwards planted in the yard. Once the Boerner’s moved in roughly 22 years ago they had the pleasure of watching the tree grow and have enjoyed its beauty with each coming year.

“The birds built nests in it, the kids played games around it, even the pet dog slept under it. Without realizing it, we had grown attached to the tree over the years, at the same time not realizing how much it had grown,” explains Vicki Boerner. “Now the tree has outgrown its living space with its lovely branches draping over the driveway.”

With much reservation, the Boerner’s searched for a way to respectfully dispose of the tree. As they read about GAGE’s official City Christmas tree search in the paper they knew their beloved family tree would be an ideal candidate. “Thanks to the City of Evansville and GAGE, the tree will have its grand finale in the same way that it began, as a beautiful Christmas tree adorned with decorations during the holiday season, lighting the faces and bringing joy to many,” proclaims Vicki.

Now in its 20th year, the Downtown Holiday Parade has become a community tradition for ringing in the holidays. Each year, thousands gather along the Downtown sidewalks to watch the beautiful floats, marching bands, clowns, dancing troops along with much more. The day’s festivities include the lighting of the City Christmas Tree and the highly anticipated arrival of Santa Claus. In addition, Santa’s Workshop presented by Fifth Third Bank will be located at the park on Fourth & Main from 1pm to 3pm and includes photos with Santa, free arts and crafts for kids and live entertainment. The parade begins promptly at 3pm.

IceMen Notch First Win In Franchise History

November 15th, 2008 will go down as a historic day in Evansville professional sports history. The Evansville IceMen, of the All American Hockey Association, defeated the Battle Creek Revolution 3-2.

The IceMen started the scoring late in the first period when C.J. Schneider skated through the Revolution defense, along with local products Isaac Coy and Shawn Lee, and put in the first goal of the night. The Revolution responded just 52 seconds later when, on the power play, Nigel Hawrylow pushed the puck into the net.

The Revolution took the lead late in the second period on Hawrylow’s second goal of the game.

The IceMen entered the third period down by one. It took less then two minutes for the game to get knotted up again, when C.J. Schneider put in his second goal of the night, assisted by Matt Hoon and Isaac Coy. Ten minutes later the IceMen took the lead when Dan Kohanchuk flew into the Revolution zone on a breakaway and made an amazing move to net the puck. The IceMen held on for the historic first victory.

IceMen goaltender Matt Wagner had a fantastic game, for the second night in a row, making 50 saves in the victory. The crowd of 1028 went home very happy with their newest professional sports team.

“This is a great night for our team and for the city of Evansville”, General Manager Chip Rossetti said after the game. “We have worked so hard to prepare for today and the guys played hard and deserve this win.”

The IceMen hit the road next weekend for a three game trip to Detroit and Chi-Town, before returning home to take on the Revolution again on Saturday, November 29th.

Roger’s will be hosting a special reception at their Eastland Mall location on Sunday, November 16 beginning at noon. Their line of Chamilia Jewelry and the new pink ribbon charm will be showcased at the event and a portion of the sales from this special day will be donated to the Greater Evansville Affiliate.

Monies raised from the event provide funding for local education, screening, treatment and support programs in addition to supporting Komen’s Award and Research Grant Program. “In order to fund breast health programs to the underserved men and women of our 28-county service area, we still need the tri-state’s help,” states Sheila Seiler, Executive Director of the Greater Evansville Affiliate. “More and more people look to Komen for assistance in paying for mammography and treatment services. Tommy Keene, the critically acclaimed power-pop pioneer, is set to release his first solo album in nearly three years, In The Late Bright, on Feb. 17 via Second Motion Records.

The 11-track album, co-produced by Keene and R. Walt Vincent (Pete Yorn, James Blunt), was recorded in Keene’s Los Angeles home earlier this year and features a wide range of songs from the rollicking opener, “Late Bright,” to his first recorded instrumental (“Elevated”) and the wistful “Save This Harmony.”

Keene, a DC-area native whose resume is littered with cred-building milestone after milestone, released his solo debut Strange Alliance in 1982. However, it was a six-song EP (Places That Are Gone, 1984) that brought him national attention, landing him atop the venerable Village Voice Pazz & Jop critic’s poll. Since that time, Keene has won numerous fans and accolades and shaped modern power-pop. From four star reviews in Rolling Stone to Entertainment Weekly proclaiming Keene to have “crafted some of the best power pop of the '80s…”, Keene has also become an in demand player, touring and recording with Paul Westerberg and Robert Pollard. The New Harmony Business Associates will welcome in the holiday season at the 24^thannual Christmas in New Harmony Festival December 5^th, 6^th & 7^th, 2008.

Events begin Friday evening with the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at the New Harmony Inn followed by the annual themed shopping party Candlelight Glow, Frosty Fantasy at the Antique Showrooms on Church Street 6-8 pm with Dessert and Wine Tasting.

Sweethearts of The Rodeo To Perform @ The Bluebird Café

Taking their name from the seminal Byrds album Sweetheart of the Rodeo, sisters Janis Oliver and Kristine Arnold have been going strong as the Sweethearts of the Rodeo since their debut album in 1986. They’ve weathered many a change in both their professional (switching labels) and personal lives (living in separate states, juggling family responsibilities). The only constant was the music. From their classic cuts like Midnight Girl/Sunset Town, Chains of Gold, Satisfy You, Blue To the Bone, Since I Found You . . .to recent cuts off of their Sugar Hill releases Rodeo Waltz and Beautiful Lies.

Getting their start on the LA club circuit during their teen years, billed as The Oliver Sisters, the duo began to make a name for themselves. They took their new-found notoriety with them to Nashville, changed their name, got a new record deal and thus began the Sweethearts of the Rodeo’s reign at the top of the charts.

During that earlier period, the Sweethearts of the Rodeo were nominated by the CMA for Duo of the Year, their music was constantly charting and their songs were used in various films . . . the always changing landscape of the industry led the the Sweethearts to eventually leave their major label, taking their “harmony-infused blend of bluegrass, folk and traditional country” to a smaller label, Sugar Hill, where they were granted more creative control over their musical output. And that is where they have remained since 1993.

2000 saw the release of Anthology. . .an retrospective of the Sweethearts of the Rodeo’s career from the early 80’s on. The Sweethearts of the Rodeo still play the occasional live gig, featuring their frequent hits. One of these occasional gigs will be their annual day-after-Thanksgiving show at The Bluebird Café.

Evansville Icemen Ready for Season Opener

It has been a long time in the making, but it is finally here. The Inaugural Season of
Evansville IceMen hockey begins this Friday, November 14th, when the IceMen hit the ice to take on the Chi-Town Shooters at 8 p.m.

"We are really excited about opening night," General Manager Chip Rossetti said. "We have been working very hard to get this ready and we feel that we have a very
competitive team. We are going to work to win a Championship this season."

Head Coach Jason Reichart, "Wait until you see the quality of play this weekend. These guys are really good and the hockey is going to be great."

Tickets are going to be available at Swonder Ice Arena and through the IceMen office starting on Thursday.

Saturday's game against the Battle Creek Revolution has a special promotion. Since
Saturday is also the start of hunting season in the Tri-State, the IceMen are offering a $1 dollar off general admission ticket if you wear your camo to the game that night."

The team is expecting big crowds both nights.

WARRICK HUMANE SOCIETY COLLECTING DONATIONS FOR RECENTLY BURNED McCLEAN CO. HS

Warrick Humane Society, 5722 Vann Rd., Newburgh, is collecting items to send to the McClean County Animal Shelter after it burned. Bring your donations to WHS and leave in the barrel on the front porch. Things they need include dog food, dog bedding, toys, water and food bowls, cleaning supplies and pet crates of all sizes.

Financial support can be dropped off at WHS, too, from 1-5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Please earmark checks McClean Co. Animal Shelter.
